The Dental Association is launching “Healthy Teeth Week” at the end of this month to offer free dental check-ups to citizens. This event aims to improve oral health awareness and provide accessible care to those who may not regularly visit a dentist. Oral health is a critical part of overall wellbeing, as poor dental hygiene can lead to serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Studies show that 47% of adults over 30 have some form of gum disease, and untreated dental problems can worsen over time. Early detection through regular check-ups can prevent these issues and save on long-term healthcare costs.

During “Healthy Teeth Week,” free check-ups will be available at multiple locations across the city 24th to the 29th of this month. Citizens holding valid Hong Kong identity documents can participate in the event. All registered dentists participate on a voluntary basis. Activity stickers are posted outside the clinic. Services include basic examinations, oral cancer screenings, and advice on maintaining good oral hygiene. The event is open to all ages, with a focus on low-income individuals who may not have access to regular dental care. Over 100 licensed dentists and hygienists will volunteer their time to ensure the event runs smoothly. Last year, a similar event served over 5,000 people, with many receiving follow-up care for issues detected during the check-ups.

A typical dental check-up includes a visual examination of the teeth and gums, cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, and X-rays if needed. Dentists look for cavities, gum disease, and signs of oral cancer. They also provide personalized advice on brushing, flossing, and diet to improve oral health. The American Dental Association recommends check-ups every six months to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Free dental check-ups benefit the community by reducing the financial burden of dental care and increasing awareness of oral health. Early detection of issues like cavities or gum disease can prevent more serious problems later. Studies show that communities with access to free dental care see a 20% reduction in emergency dental visits. The Dental Association plans to expand these initiatives in the future, using technology like teledentistry to reach more people and partnering with other health organizations to promote overall wellbeing.

To prepare for your check-up, brush and floss your teeth thoroughly, and bring a list of any medications or supplements you’re taking. Be honest about your oral hygiene habits and any pain or discomfort you’re experiencing. If you have previous dental records or X-rays, bring them along to help the dentist understand your dental history. Following these steps ensures you get the most out of your visit.
